Her family life was broken by conflict, divorce, and economic hardship. At just 16, she carried emotional wounds that left her feeling hopeless about her future. But through unexpected friendships and the steady presence of a local church, everything began to change. Phal grew up in a home where peace was rare. Her father drank heavily and argued with her mother, often turning violent. The tension eventually tore the family apart, leaving Phal and her mother alone and struggling.

Like many in her village, her mother turned to fortune tellers for guidance. But it brought no healing, only more confusion. Phal withdrew emotionally and nearly gave up on school. Even though her mother worked hard to pay her tuition, Phal felt angry, uncertain, and afraid of what her life would become.

That’s when a few Christian friends from her village started reaching out. They invited her to church. To a Discovery Bible Study. To join a Women’s Cycle of Life training. At first, she refused. But they kept coming. Not with pressure, but with presence showing her care, respect, and friendship.

Eventually, Phal’s heart softened. When Pastor Chai and the church team prayed with her and told her she was a daughter of the heavenly Father, something shifted. On April 4, 2025, Phal decided to follow Jesus. Since that day, Phal says she’s found courage and hope. Her mother, too, has experienced God’s provision and peace. Together, they attend church, participate in wholistic health and Bible study groups, and are rebuilding their lives on a new foundation.

“We are very grateful to God for salvation,” Phal shared. “Now we feel comfort and motivation.”

She recently graduated high school, a milestone she once doubted she’d ever reach and now dreams of attending university.

MAI’s Broader Work in Cambodia:

Phal’s story is just one of many.
